Why Plywood Is Not Our Preferred Closet Material

Plywood has a strong reputation in construction, but a closet system is not a structural framing application. For precision-built closets, we prefer high-quality thermally fused laminate (TFL) panels—such as EGGER products—because they are engineered for consistent furniture and storage applications, including closet systems.

Plywood Is Not Always Consistent

 “Plywood” is a broad category, not one uniform material. Its performance can vary based on veneer quality, number of plies, core construction, adhesive, mill standards, storage conditions, and moisture exposure.

Because plywood is built from layers of real-wood veneer, it can react to changing humidity. Panels may bow, cup, twist, or move over time—particularly when the material is lower grade, improperly stored, insufficiently acclimated, or used in wide closet components. Industry guidance recognizes plywood’s susceptibility to moisture-related dimensional movement and identifies cupping, bowing, and twisting as forms of panel warp.

That variability is not ideal in a closet system, where straight vertical panels, level shelves, aligned drawer openings, and consistent door or drawer reveals are essential to a clean, long-lasting installation.

Closets Require Precision

 A quality closet system is a coordinated assembly of shelves, partitions, drawer components, hanging sections, hardware, and wall connections. Every panel needs to remain flat, predictable, and compatible with the rest of the system.

A slight twist or bow in a plywood panel can affect:
